Transferring to a new site | raysware.com

I will be moving to a new site, raysware.com on 17th of march. Thanks to you guys for visiting my blog and looking at my rants or review on computer things. At first, I was thinking whether raysware.com or terencesware.com would sound better. Terence, by the way, is my alias :).....seriously, I think I watch too much Alias (J. Garner rocks!) to make a alias of my own.

Anyway, to ease the reader by typing less word, I decided on "raysware.com". Why do I want to ditch the free blogger and use paid web hosting? Because I want the freedom to edit many things~ Besides, having your own domain sounds cool!

The company that provides the web hosting service that I used is T&N Communications. They currently having a promotion till the end of this month, which is 31st of March 2009. That promotion is, buy 1 year of web hosting, get another year free. For old user, renew this year, get another year free.

I bought the RM15 web hosting (starter plan) which included 1GB space with 10GB bandwidth and another RM 35 for the domain name. Simply said, for 2 years I will be paying RM 85 (RM 15+RM35*2) as domain name is not included in the promotion. I just hope that the 1GB space will be enough for my blog.

Any comments on decision to change to paid web hosting? Or questions regarding to the web hosting service? Just leave your comments here :)

My thoughts on Overclocking Phenom II to 6.5GHz

If you haven't watch the video below, please do so. Otherwise you won't understand what I'm ranting about.

Nice, now that you watch the video, don't you think it's a little bit wasteful to use the liquid nitrogen to overclock the Phenom II to 6.5GHz? I mean, to convert a gas form of N(nitrogen) to liquid N must have used up quite a lot of resources(money, energy). If they have the money to do this kind of a thing, why don't they put those money into their R&D to create a better cpu that can rival the core i7 under NORMAL conditions(air cooling).

Maybe this is a publicity, to make people think that "Oh my! Phenom II processors are so overclockable! I'm so gonna get one now!" But, do you know that, under air cooling, Phenom II more or less has the same overclock range as Core 2 Quads. Given the cheaper price, Phenom I would definitely be my choice.

So, do you guys and girls agree with this publicity tactic? Maybe the resources could have been used to do better things such as improving designs to beat the core i7? Please kindly leave your comments here :)

March 2009 PC Configuration Guide | Phenom II X3 to X4

Thanks to the competition between Intel and AMD, prices of Core 2 Quad and Phenom II have come down significantly over the month. What's more, there's a fact that Phenom II X3 can turn into a X4 simply by buying X3 cpu with Biostar 790GX+SB750 chipset motherboard, then set the ACC (Advance Clock Calibration) to auto. And BINGO, you get an X4 cpu for the price of a X3. Quote from the guru3d, "Only with the 904xxxx-stepping; this tweak seems to work, not with 0849xxxx". So good luck with your search :)

Now let's continue with this month's guide:

  • 2k pc can play games at 1440*900 or 1280*1024 or 1680*1050 resolution with medium to high settings.
  • 3k pc can play games at 1680*1050 or 1920*1080 with medium to high settings

And here's the pc guide for 2k pc (Most items are based on C-zone pricelist as of 4/3/09):

  • CPU: AMD Athlon X2 5200+ (2.7GHz) - RM 210
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM DDR2 800MHz 2GB *2 - RM 160
  • Motherboard: Albatron KM740G- RM 200
  • Hard Drive: Seagate 500GB SATA2 16MB Cache - RM 195
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD4830 512MB - RM 380
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM 75
  • Monitor: Acer X203 with speaker (20" wide) - RM 380
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340 - RM 125
  • PSU: Cooler Master Extreme Power 460W - RM 160
  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89

Total : RM 1974

Note 1 : With monitor prices falling down, each penny can get you a bigger screen size. The Acer monitor incorporates the speaker, thus I removed last month's speaker. Having more budget to spend, thus I increased the HDD size.

And here's 3k pc guide:

  • CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 710 2.6GHz - RM 465
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM 2GB DDR2 800MHz * 2 - RM160
  • HDD: Western Digital 640GB SATA - RM 230
  • Motherboard: Asus M3A78-EM - RM 300
  • Graphic Card: Palit HD4850 SUPER 512MB DDR3 - RM520
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM75
  • Monitor: Acer X233 23" wide LCD - RM 560
  • Speaker: Edifier M1350 2.1 - RM 80
  • PSU: OCZ Stealth X Stream- RM319
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340- RM 125
  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89

Total : RM 2923

Note 2 : The Phenom II X3 720(2.8GHz) beats Phenom X4 9850(2.5GHz) hands down, so I presumed that X3 710 can beat X4 9650 since both are 200 MHz difference from the cpus mentioned above. Because the 710 is cheaper than 9650 and offer more performance than it, thus 710 is the wise choice.

Note 3 : Phenom II X3 710 is a new cpu, thus you must update the motherboard with the newest bios to support it.

How's my configuration? Do you have other opinions? Please kindly leave them here :)

2 Free Open Source Games For All Platform

Open source community is getting bigger than ever and they have released many many free games that can fill up your boring time. And here I present 2 games that caught my attention : Nexuiz and Warsow. Both are First Person Shooter and you can play with friends or strangers on server.

Nexuiz

This FPS is developed by Alientrap Software(funny name, isn't it). It uses a heavily modified Quake engine called DarkPlaces. This game have teleporters so you can jump into it to avoid being shot at, and don't worry, the bullets aren't gonna pass through the wall. This game has both single player and multiplayer option, so you can play with bots if you have a not-so-fast internet connection.

Shotguns, plasma rifle, rocket launcher are but a few of the available weapons, though my preferred weapon is a fast rapid fire missile launcher. The graphics of the game can bring your graphic card to the knees if you don't have enough graphic power. Take my AMD/ATI Radeon HD 3850 for example, highest quality without 4X AA makes my fps hover around 30~40.

Warsow

If your graphic card is not one of the high end, don't fret. There is a still a fps that provide a good gaming experience with a small system requirement. I introduce Warsow, a multiplayer only fps that looks a bit like Team Fortress 2 rip-off. The graphics looks a bit like TF 2 too as it employ the cel-shading technology to beautify the game. Even a GMA 950 used by netbooks can play this game around 30 fps in low quality.

Like the game above, there are around 7 weapons for you to pawn your enemy, which includes the rocket launcher, electric rifle, disc bomb. The special feature of this game is the ability to bunnyjump, which means that you will move faster as you jump and jump upon touching the ground. Those who played Cs 1.0 before would sure know this move.

Any more free games out there? Played these 2 games before? Please kindly leave your comments here :)

World of Warcraft Killer

"Stop looking for a WoW killer"....I'm totally agree with this post! Ever since I played World of Warcraft beta (which is many many many years ago), I've been looking for free alternative of that God-blessed game.

Oh well, we all know how it ends up.....I couldn't find any MMORPG that came close to it. The last game that I played is Runes of Magic. You know what? That game mechanics is almost like a clone of WoW. Why do I say that? It's because your game character can jump, the shortcut keys are same as WoW(Ctrl + C to open character menu, Ctrl + L to open quest list), and there's a "?" mark on quest giver's head. Even though the game mechanics is almost the same, it's still didn't capture my heart...because I can't see npcs named Jaina, Thrall, nor Arthas! Simply said, I'm in love with the Warcraft lores.

There's 1 more game that I have spent nearly 6 month on it before deciding to quit it for the sake of my big exam. That game is Perfect World, developed by Wan Mei Beijing Company, and it can jump, fly, ride mounts and 3 races with 6 classes totaled together. At first I was totally into the game, and I thought that it was comparable to WoW. Oh hell! I was gravely mistaken. Poorly translated english, close to none number of quest after lvl 40, overpowered Item Shop character. And that is enough. I rather pay monthly subscription than having to face with overpowered character stacked against me.

And so, like the post said, there's no WoW killer unless Blizzard decided to abandon WoW(which is impossible). So to those of you who are praying for WoW killer, stop daydreaming and play the World of Warcraft. It's WORTH it. And don't blame me when you getting addicted to it.

My ignorance on Netbooks

Last few weeks I posted "my thoughts on netbooks", and I says that they are the closest thing to rubbish. Oh well...I think I will have to eat my words then, because I'm gonna get myself a netbook! I have been looking at Acer Aspire One D150 and I think the specs should be good enough for programming Python, C++ , VB.Net and etc.

I know I'm gonna be laughed for thinking that a netbook can be use for programming stuff, but hell with it. After reading Kamigoroshi comment, and I thought,  a 1.2GHz Pentium-M can do programming, why can't the 1.6GHz Atom cpu do it? With this in mind, I'm gonna get a netbook, and save more $$ to upgrade my desktop, so that my desktop can always play the latest games :)

Once I get my netbook, I'm gonna ditch XP Home in favour of Ubuntu, as I have been eager to use it and it's also suitable for low-end hardware too. Just hope that everything works. My desktop can't waste it's space on Ubuntu as it is a gaming machine and I also don't want my brother to get all grumpy for installing "useless" things.

Now let's just hope that I won't change my mind...yet.

My story about World of Warcraft

Unless you live in a cave, I pretty sure that many people knows what WoW(World of Warcraft) is. Last time when I was playing the open beta, I pretty much hooked on to it, playing day and night. After the beta ends, my life also pretty much ended, because I can't spend RM50 a month to play a game as my dad will surely kill me!

After a few years of playing other online games, I still couldn't forget the feeling of playing WoW. It's just like an addiction, or maybe a desire, that's really, really hard to quench. To quench the thirst bit by bit, I have been buying all the things that related to warcraft, like warcraft novels, comics, manga. Warcraft trading cards is next on my list.

Occasionaly I will play as trial account (Yup! I created at least 3 trial accounts), but no to much satisfaction as I can only level up to measly 20 with no AH to use. I have been thinking about buying the WoW battlechest which includes both original WoW and it's expansion, Burning Crusade. But I still don't know whether it's worth it or not to play for 30 days and wait till I earn money before continue playing it again.

Due to this thinking of mine, I have learned perseverence. What I want to buy but I can't buy now, I will think of warcraft, think of how much I have endured NOT being able to play that fantastic, God-blessed MMORPG game. Now, if I can just get my hand on my 1st salary....

February 2009 PC Configuration Guide

Chinese New Year have passed, the non-married people got more notes in their wallets while married couples get a bit lighter wallet. During the last month, Phenom II has been released and it's performance is almost equal or better than Intel Core 2 Quad of the same price. Couple with a cheap AM2+ motherboard, and you get yourself quite a good system. Let's continue to this month's configuration guide.
  • 2k pc can play games at 1440*900 or 1280*1024 or 1680*1050 resolution with medium to high settings.
  • 3k pc can play games at 1680*1050 or 1920*1080 with medium to high settings
And here's the pc guide for 2k pc (Most items are based on C-zone pricelist as of 5/2/09):
  • CPU: AMD Athlon X2 5200+ (2.7GHz) - RM 215
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM DDR2 800MHz 2GB *2 - RM 160
  • Motherboard: Albatron KM740G- RM 200
  • Hard Drive: Seagate 320GB SATA2 16MB Cache - RM 155
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD4830 512MB - RM 380
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM 75
  • Monitor: Benq 18.5" G900HD - RM 389
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340 - RM 125
  • PSU: Cooler Master Extreme Power 460W - RM 160
  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89
  • Speaker: Logitech R5 2.0 - RM 49
Total : RM 1997
Note 1 : Performance of 9800gt and HD4830 are almost the same, so I choose the cheaper of the 2, which is HD4830. The Palit motherboard has disappeared from the list, thus I choose the Albatron KM740G. Even though it has less features, the lower price tag make up for it. Sad news is that the RAM price has increase.

And here's 3k pc guide:
  • CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9650 2.3GHz - RM 490
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM 2GB DDR2 800MHz * 2 - RM160
  • HDD: Western Digital 640GB SATA - RM 220
  • Motherboard: Asus M3A78-EM - RM 300
  • Graphic Card: Palit HD4850 SUPER 512MB DDR3 - RM530
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM75
  • Monitor: Benq 22" LCD (T221W) - RM 545
  • Speaker: Edifier M1350 2.1 - RM 80
  • PSU: OCZ Stealth X Stream- RM319
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340- RM 125
  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89
Total : RM 2933
Note : I changed the motherboard for it's cheaper compared to last month's guide, and changed the PSU for more power.

Recession is still lingering around and we have to take every to reduce unnecessary money output, even on PC configuration. Hope this recession will be leaving us soon :)

Got any opinion about my configuration? Please kindly leave them here :)

My thoughts on Netbooks

Netbooks may be the "IN" things right now but I will never go and buy any of those "nerfed" notebooks. What good are those netbooks for anyway? Other than being light weight and small? They are priced so close to their notebooks siblings that an extra 200 ringgit would have get you bigger screen and processing power that is 2 to 4 times faster than the netbooks.

You might argue that netbooks are good for surfing the web and watching some movies. But, what pleasure can you get from reading text and watching movies on such a small screen? I bet half the time you have to squint your eyes to read the text and spend more time scrolling the site than reading it.

Mentioning movies, nowadays movies are getting hi-def, and the petty ATOM cpu of Intel have to struggle with 720p movies. The graphics accelerator of netbooks are usually GMA 950, which is so yesterday that it can't play any 3D games nor help in processing movies. My friend once even told me that he plans to play games on his netbook. And it made me laugh till I almost lose my breath.

What happens if you have to open a big document files that contains like a few hundred pages? Your netbooks will be so LAG that you thought there might be some virus hiding inside your system. Once opened it, it might take a second or more to move from one page to another.

My advise : don't ever buy a netbook. It will make you suffer hair loss, impatient behavior and worsens your eyesight. Might as well add a few hundred ringgit on notebooks that can do more than what netbooks can ever dreams of achieving.

Disagree with my thoughts? Feels that there's more things that netbooks can do? Then kindly leave your comments here :)

Deluge Review : Unthrottled Download

After being bored of using the slow downloads(5KB and below) using utorrent, I decided to check out another torrent client. After surfing the web for a while, I discovered Deluge, a torrent client originally developed for Linux, Mac OS and now ported to Windows.

1st thing 1st, throttle download is quite popular among Malaysia as our main ISP, TM Net, likes to control our bandwidth to make way for other users. They emphasize quantity over quality and now I can't wait till I change to another ISP in near future. What special in Deluge is that their download is unthrottled (or so I've heard), unlike utorrent. So you can download very fast using Deluge compared to utorrent.

The Deluge file size is 27MB and installation size is 100MB, which is a very LARGE difference between utorrent (less than 1MB for both). And the RAM it takes to run is around 60MB, compared to utorrent of only 8MB. AND it also LAGS when using the interface, such as changing the settings, opening the folder from the torrent list. But in the end, the download speed is FAST compared to utorrent, 30KB to 5KB of utorrent.

The Deluge have a Daemon port which I have no idea how to use it, and also you can specify when to seed using the seed ratio requirement. The GUI of Deluge looks very Gnome-ish (Linux users will know what this is), which looks very refreshing to me who always facing the Windows XP look.

To add a torrent file, you can't just double-click it. You have to click the "+" then find out where the torrent is to add it. At least it's faster when you have to add many torrent at once.

In the end, Deluge appeal to me because of the looks and most importantly, the speed! For those who have many space to spare, you should try out this torrent client.

How's your experience using this client? Does it offer better speed compared to other client? Kindly leave your comments here.

Savage 2 Review : DotA in FPS

First and foremost, I hate DotA (Defense of the Ancients). You can't jump, you can't run and you can only use mouse to direct your movement, and that is not COOL. I like FPS (First Person Shooter) games, it gives you the feeling of being inside the game, which is more Exciting! And here I present Savage 2 : A Tortured Soul, a free FPS and RTS (Real-Time Strategy)combined MMO game.

Story
2 factions fighting against each other. Legion of Man vs Beast Horde. Humans don't like Beasts, Beasts don't like Humans. That's it. If you really want to read about the story, click here.

Gameplay
You play as Legion of Man (LoM) or Beast Horde (BH) with a maximum of 64 players on a map, though finding a 32 players' map is a hard task. LoM's units mainly use melee weapons such as hammer, axes and swords, ranged weapons such as guns, crossbow and other projectile weapons that consumes ammo. BH use their own claw to deal melee damage and employ magic as their ranged attack that consumes mana.

Most normal units are free, but more powerful unit such as Legionaire(LoM) or Predator(BH) costs golds to use it. You can play as building destroyer units too (needs golds), such as Steambuchet and Battering Ram for LoM, Tempest and Behemoth (LotR Troll rip-off) for the BH faction.

Gold is the only resource in the game. You can earn it by killing NPC creeps, enemy units or build Steam Mine (LoM) or Mine Grove (BH) on a gold mine.

You can play as commander or on-the-ground units. As a commander, your job is to build and help your units whenever possible. You get the top-down view, just like a RTS game. You can't swith off to play as ground units. You get special powers such as armor enhancement or heal to help your units and armor reduction or drain life to deteriorate enemy units. Use those ability whenever you can as they can really turn the tides.

As the on-the-ground units, you can be a healer, a melee attacker, stealth unit or siege unit. Your objective is to destroy other factions Stronghold(LoM) or Lair(BH). That's all. Easy? In your dreams. You have to get past the enemy factions Defence Tower and their units too. You can split into different squads with an officer. The officer have a special ability to create a spawn point. Most important thing as ground unit, STICK TOGETHER! Going ramboo and you are sure to be killed. If your commander suddenly disconnected or maybe flee, you can assume the mantle of commander when you respawn.
You will level up each time you gain enough experience, up to maximum of level 15. Each level you get 4 points to split into 4 attribute : endurance (increase hp, hp regeneration), intelligence (increase mana, mana regenaration), agility (increase stamina, stamina regeneration) and strength (increase melee attack).

Constructing specific building gives you access to other units, abilities or items. As a ground unit, you can buy armor or potions to aid you in battle.

You also get the chance to become Hellbourne unit, which is far more powerful that any unit in both factions. To become 1, you have to kill a certain amount of enemy unit and build a Hellshrine on a Scar. Once you become Hellbourne, your faction will almost certainly win the battle. Be warned though, healer units from both factions can deal a lot of damage to Hellbourne.

You can upgrade you account to Prime account for USD 9.99 (1-time charge). Having a Prime account allows you to have extra 2 inventory slots, play as Hellbourne for unlimited times (regular accounts can only play once per map), view your stats online and download every game replays.

Graphics and Sound
The graphic quality is simply beautiful. You can clearly see the details of the building, and the building will catch fire when it's health is getting low. And explosion from buildings shakes the screen, giving you some realism.

The music sounds to me like orchestra from medieval time. Every gun have their own shooting sound and melee weapon swinging sound. You can make the voice chat produce sound from Arnold Schwarzenegger (though I don't know how) such as "Get Your Mother Here."

Conclusion
This game is really addictive. You can get lost in it for hours and still don't want to quit! By the way, this game is playable on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platform. Yes, you read it right, LINUX! A good quality game for the free OS. It didn't lag even though there's like 32 on a map. The problem is that there aren't many players on the server, around 160++ player every time I login to play, maximum being 240++.
Overall, this game deserves a 9 out of 10 for being fun, addictive, free, combining many elements and being Linux platform compatible.

AMD Phenom II Released

AMD Phenom II has been released and it's performance is more or less equivalent to the same price range of other Intel Core 2 Quads. However, it still can't beat the Core i7 cpu. AMD Phenom II employs 45nm manufacturing process (lower power consumption) and contains 6MB of L3 cache.

AMD Phenom II currently available as Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and Phenom II X4 920 (trying to copy the Core i7 940 & 920?) with price of 275 USD and 235 USD respectively.

More reviews here:

What do you guys and girls think about this processor? Will it be able to take a small chunk of Intel controlled market or more than that? Will it prove more worth than Intel Core 2 Quads systems? Leave your comments then~

January 2009 PC Configuration Guide

This year started off with a not so good economy in hand, and every 1 trying to cut costs in every way, including their PC configuration. The recent shut down of Western Digital hard drive factory in Sarawak (or Sabah?) cost many people their jobs, and I feel sorry for them. But feelings aside, here's this month's pc guide.
  • 2k pc can play games at 1440*900 or 1280*1024 or 1680*1050 resolution with medium to high settings.
  • 3k pc can play games at 1680*1050 or 1920*1080 with medium to high settings
And here's the pc guide for 2k pc (Most items are based on C-zone pricelist as of 3/1/09):
  • CPU: AMD Athlon X2 5200+ (2.7GHz) - RM 215
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM DDR2 800MHz 2GB *2 - RM 120
  • Motherboard: Palit AA-780GA - RM 220
  • Hard Drive: Seagate 320GB SATA2 16MB Cache - RM 155
  • GPU: Palit 9800GT 512MB - RM 430
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM 75
  • Monitor: Benq 18.5" G900HD - RM 389
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340 - RM 125

  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89
  • Speaker: Logitech R5 2.0 - RM 49
Total : RM 2027
Note 1 : Since the Forsa 9800gt disappear from the price list, therefore I choose the Palit 9800gt. There are not much changes compared to last month's 2k pc guide.

And here's 3k pc guide:
  • CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9650 2.3GHz - RM 500
  • RAM: Kingston Value RAM 2GB DDR2 800MHz * 2 - RM120
  • HDD: Western Digital 640GB SATA - RM 220
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H - RM 315
  • Graphic Card: Palit HD4850 SUPER 512MB DDR3 - RM530
  • Optical Drive: LG DVDRW SATA - RM75
  • Monitor: Benq 22" LCD (T221W) - RM 545
  • Speaker: Edifier M1350 2.1 - RM 80
  • PSU: HEC Ace power 480W - RM290
  • Casing: Cooler Master Elite 340- RM 125
  • Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech G1 Gaming Desktop - RM 89
Total : RM 2889
Note 2 : Not much changes compared to last month's pc guide. Except being cheaper.

It's quite a boring thing as there are no changes. I guess we will just have to wait till the Phenom II's release to shake things up a bit.

Does Laptop Brand Really Matters?

Recently a friend of mine ask me which laptop should he buy for budget of RM 3.5K with priority on gaming. I browse through a number of laptops and found out that Benq Joybook S42 offers the best specifications for it's price. But my friend tells me that he doesn't like the brand and prefer other more known brands such as Asus, Dell or HP Compaq.

Consider this, Benq Joybook S42 (RM 3499):
  • Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 320 GB HDD
  • Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT 256MB
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • 2.35kg
And Dell Studio 14 (RM 3599):
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 250GB HDD
  • Intel GMA X3100
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • 2.4kg
Both have the same screen size (14.1 inches), Wifi, Bluetooth, DvD-Drive and 1 Year international warranty. I think most will buy the Dell because it's more well-known!

What do you guys think then? Having almost the same price but with better specs, will brand name affect the choice of your laptop?
